The Navy is spending $14 million on a $14-million, four-deck floating solar power plant, the first solar-powered vessel in the world.
The $7 million project is being built at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.
The NSWC is the Navy’s primary maritime facility, where the Navy builds and maintains ships and aircraft.
The project includes four-foot diameter solar panels on the deck of the ship, each with a capacity of 400 kilowatts.
Each solar panel weighs about 4,000 pounds and is covered by an array of copper wires.
The power plant uses a high-power, long-life, high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) module, the size of a deck chair, to generate electricity.
The Navy says the plant will be operational in 2019 and will be able to generate enough electricity to provide power for approximately 200,000 homes.
The system will be powered by two diesel engines.
The four-wheel-drive hull design also provides additional stability and lower vibration compared to traditional diesel-electric powerplants.
The solar panels, made of polyethylene and plastic, will be installed on the ships hull and the decks of the Navy ships.
The U.S. Navy has already installed solar-power systems on ships in both Europe and Asia.
The US Navy says that, when it comes to the naval presence in the Pacific, the solar fleet is already in place.
The Pentagon has also been working to increase solar power on ships.
In the 2020 fiscal year, the Navy was the only nation in the Navy to have a solar-electric fleet in service.
This has led to an increase in solar-generated power on US ships, according to Navy officials.
The Naval Solar Energy Systems Center (Nova Scotia), the Navy Solar Energy Development Center (USNEDC), and the Naval Electric Propulsion Laboratory (NEPL) are all located in Naval Air Force Base, Florida, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, or NASFAC, which is part of the US Navy, said in a statement.
The new solar power station will be operated by Nova Scotia Power Corporation, the company that built the Nova Scotia PV plant, according a spokesperson for Nova Scotia.
The Solar Power Plant is part a $2.5 billion contract awarded in January for the U.K.-based firm Advanced Solar Solutions.
The contract, which was awarded to the Navy under the program known as Joint Naval Solar Power (JNSP), calls for Advanced Solar to build a $5.9 million floating solar plant that can provide approximately 2,000 megawatts (MW) of power, and will supply enough power to power about 8,000 households, according the Naval Solar Engineering Center, a non-profit, government-owned nonprofit that provides technology for Naval solar power projects.
The JNSP program is funded through a $1.4 billion contract with the U-K.
The two-year-long contract was awarded in August, the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) said in September.
The NEA is responsible for managing and coordinating U.N. nuclear energy projects, and oversees the program.
The nuclear energy agency has been awarded a contract with Naval Solar to produce about 1,000 MW of solar power for the nuclear power plant and for the JNSR project.
The Nuclear Energy Production Center (NEPC), the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Laboratories (NNPL) and the Nuclear Power Systems Laboratory (NNSL) are also part of Naval Solar.
“The project is a significant milestone in the solar power programme, with the first offshore solar power generating capacity, and the first U. S. naval vessel with a solar plant, to be installed,” Naval Space Engineering Command said in the release.
The navy is also working on a nuclear power project in the Atlantic Ocean, a $3.8 billion program to develop a new generation of nuclear reactors.
The program will also build nuclear power plants in the South China Sea.
“This project will help maintain the U and our allies naval presence there,” Rear Adm.
Jonathan Banks, the USN’s Undersea Warfare Command, said.
The military’s solar program is a big step forward for the solar industry, said John Pugh, chief executive officer of the American Solar Energy Association, in a press release.
“There’s no doubt that this is a great milestone for the American solar industry,” he said.
