Posted September 14, 2019 06:08:55When the roof of a Brisbane apartment building fell off in 2016, it broke a world record, according to a report.
The roof of the apartment block in Brisbane’s CBD, built in 1999, came down from the top of a five-storey building, and was the first floor to fall off in Australia.
It is the first time a floor in Australia has fallen from a structure without any assistance.
A report by the ABC found the flooring was engineered using advanced computer modelling, and had a cost of $5.4 million.
“It was a very unusual situation, and it was certainly something that I would have expected to happen with the construction of a building,” Professor Steve Kowalski from the University of New South Wales said.
Professor Kowarski said the roof fell because the roof had not been insulated.
He said it was a good thing the roof was not falling because the building was not going to be demolished.
When it did fall, the floor tiles broke off the roof, which was the equivalent of a 40-metre slab, breaking off a section of the roof.
An estimated 5,500 people were living in the building at the time.
Pvc floor tiles have become an increasingly popular option for apartment buildings and will continue to be used for some time.
